Advanced Driving NEW.jpg

This driver training is ideal for those who want to become safer, more skilled and more confident behind the wheel. Throughout the session, you will be introduced to the system of car control driving techniques, tailored to your needs and experience. The training takes place across all road types, including rural roads, urban environments, motorways and dual carriageways to ensure an overall training experience.

Advanced driving is:

Advanced driving is a safe, methodical and leaves nothing to chance method of driving. Advanced drivers are more observant, with better anticipation skills to react to changes in the surrounding conditions. This enables them to plan their driving, to deal with any circumstances by using the ‘System of Car Control’ which gives a systematic way to deal with all hazards.

The 'System of Car Control' is detailed in Roadcraft – The Police Driver Handbook. However, it is unlikely that anyone will gain a high grade without a good knowledge of the current editions of The Highway Code or the Rules of the Road and Roadcraft.

The reasons to complete advanced driver training is provided to help drivers to:

  • Improve confidence and ability.

  • Improve driver concentration.

  • Become more observant.

  • analyse and anticipate the actions of others.

  • develop a positive attitude towards driving and other road users.

  • create space and time to deal with hazards, the drivers own mistakes or other road users mistakes.

Research has found that advanced drivers are 20% less likely to be involved in a collision, are less likely to have penalty points and more likely to remain collision free.

The advantages from the training are:

  • You will enjoy driving more and feel less stressed because the drive will be so much smoother and safer.

  • You will feel more confident, both in your own driving and in your ability to deal with the behaviour of other drivers.

  • You will spend less money on fuel and cause less harm to the environment, because your driving will become smoother and more systematic, with less sharp acceleration and braking and better use of gears.

  • You may get insurance discounts.

The Training

The course begins with a relaxed chat about your aims and what you would like to get from the training. This is followed by a no-pressure initial drive, where you will encouraged to drive exactly as you normally would, without any coaching or intervention from your trainer. This helps you to ease into the session while giving us a clear, honest picture of your driving habits.

Following this drive, the trainer will discuss what was observed and you are encouraged to give feedback about your driving before any coaching takes place. Next, a number of training objectives are agreed to work on throughout the session to help improve your risk level and driving techniques.

The session is then completed with further feedback and recommendations to help with your further development. You are again encouraged to provide feedback about the session where you feel you need further practice or training to achieve your goals.

Some of the areas that may be covered are:

  • Observation skills.

  • Observation links.

  • Limit points.

  • Speed awareness.

  • Use of the vehicle controls.

  • The advantages and disadvantages of technology.
